Tire Rack notes that some manufacturers, such as Audi, specify that the rolling radius of all four tires must stay the same, with tread depth within about 4/32 of an inch across the set. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that properly inflated tires improve gas mileage by about 0.6 percent on average, and by up to 3 percent in some cases, while each 1 PSI drop across all four tires trims roughly 0.2 percent. Consider two related services while you are there. Have the wheels balanced if you feel vibration at highway speed, and AAA recommends checking the wheel alignment about every 12,000 miles or whenever tires are serviced.

Common Mistakes That Shorten Tire Life

Even drivers who remember to rotate make mistakes that undo the benefit. These are the ones we see most:

  • A vibration or shimmy in the steering wheel, especially at highway speed — a sign to check balance and alignment.
